Preparing for your first long-distance drive after passing your test can feel daunting, especially if it involves travelling with family or friends. To ensure a stress-free journey, it’s essential to conduct both internal and external checks on your vehicle. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you get your car roadworthy for your upcoming travels:
External Checks:
- Inspect the condition of your tyres, including checking tyre pressures and tread depth. Use a tyre tread depth gauge or a 20p coin to determine if the tread is within legal limits.
- Look for any signs of fluid leaks underneath the car. Place a white cardboard underneath to catch drips and identify the source of the leak.
- Check for warning lights on the dashboard and address any issues promptly.
- Test all headlights and other lights to ensure they are functioning properly.
- Activate the windscreen wipers to ensure they are effectively clearing the windshield without streaks or smears.
Internal Checks:
- Verify that the coolant level is between the minimum and maximum marks by locating the coolant tank under the bonnet.
- Check the oil level using the dipstick. Wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then check the oil level against the markings on the dipstick.
- Refill the screen wash bottle to ensure that you have an adequate supply for cleaning the windshield during your journey.
While conducting these checks may seem time-consuming, it’s far preferable to experiencing a breakdown en route to your destination. Taking the time to ensure your vehicle is in good condition will contribute to a safer and more enjoyable travel experience.
