When meeting traffic on the road you should always take into account what is the safest option but a general rule should be applied – who has a hazard in their lane. For example the picture to here shows the green car parked and is hindering the vehicle trying to get around it. If you have the hazard it is your responsibility to wait and let other traffic through before you move around the vehicle.
To get the best view and to ensure vehicles coming from behind you know what you are doing it is always best to angle the car. This not only acts as a signal of your intentions ,to go around the car, but also gives you the best view you can have down the road.
What do you think would be the best way of dealing with a situation when both of you have hazards?
Well politeness would dictate that the first person to arrive at the hazard would go through first and most of the time that is the case but some people feel they are more important than others and just push their way through so always be on guard for other vehicles who look like they are not going to slow down. Be the bigger person and stay safe – Let them pass. If they have the wrong attitude to driving they will have problems in the future, just make sure it’s not with you. So hold back let them go through and then you can move on down the road knowing you are a better driver and are now safe.
In some cases you may well find a nice polite driver who stops and flashes his lights to say “Come through”. Make sure you know that’s what this means, are they stationery and looking directly at you? If they are then there is a good chance they are letting you go but even if they are start off slowly so you can stop yourself quickly if you have made a mistake. Remember the Highway code says,
Rule 110 – Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there. Do not flash your headlights to convey any other message or intimidate other road users.
Rule 111 – Never assume that flashing headlights is a signal inviting you to proceed. Use your own judgement and proceed carefully.
However you view a hazard or when meeting traffic always take the safest option.
Safe Driving !!!
