#1 Book it… The most simple and sometimes hardest thing to do because it commits you to a time limit.

#2 Read up what is involved… So you know what you need to learn and what is expected. The test is PC based and in two parts. The first part is a 50 question multiple question test – with a pass rate of 43. The second part is hazard perception.

#3 Understand what hazard perception actually is… the second part of the theory test is hazard perception. This is a series of 14 separate video clips showing hazardous situations. You must identify them by clicking the mouse to show that you have seen the potential hazard before it actually becomes one. You must score 44 or more out of 75 to pass. You have to pass your practical driving test within 2 years or you will have to retake the theory and hazard parts again.

#4 Get learning… educational literature is what you need to find. A Pass 4 U has a comprehensive theory test pack which you can buy for £25 or you can buy the articles individually.

#5 Be Appy… whilst you learn. There are plenty of Apps out there, that you can download for your smartphone, so why not get appy, then you can learn on the move.

#6 Speak to your Driving Instructor… Yes, you can actually learn to drive before taking your theory test but you cannot take your practical driving test before you have passed the theory. Your driving instructor will help you. I can remember when my husband would sit in a local library, with one of his pupils for 30 minutes once a week to help with the theory test and learning to drive is a great way to learn theoretically!

#7 Revise, Revise, Revise… Put in the time, nothing else is going to pass this test for you but you knowing what you need to know. So, you’ve booked your test – you know your time limit available to learn. If you want to take the test earlier (or later) then visit the Change your Theory Test Appointment on Gov.UK website and make that change. But remember, you need to give 3 clear days or you’ll have to pay again.

#8 Take a practice theory test… Pop on over to www.safedrivingforlife.info and try out one of the UK GOV Car practice theory tests for yourself and see how you do!

#9 Prepare… Make sure you have your provisional photocard driving licence to take on the day, or you won’t be able to take the test, but will still have to pay.

#10 Relax… Take 3 deep breaths before you start. Relax those shoulders. If you’ve followed all the steps above, you’ve done everything you can to help you pass the test.

Now head down, good luck and we’ll see you in the driving seat!
