Preparing for your first long-distance drive after passing your test can feel daunting, especially if it involves travelling with family or friends. To ensure a stress-free journey, it’s essential to conduct both internal and external checks on your vehicle. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you get your car roadworthy for your upcoming travels:

External Checks:

  1. Inspect the condition of your tyres, including checking tyre pressures and tread depth. Use a tyre tread depth gauge or a 20p coin to determine if the tread is within legal limits.
  2. Look for any signs of fluid leaks underneath the car. Place a white cardboard underneath to catch drips and identify the source of the leak.
  3. Check for warning lights on the dashboard and address any issues promptly.
  4. Test all headlights and other lights to ensure they are functioning properly.
  5. Activate the windscreen wipers to ensure they are effectively clearing the windshield without streaks or smears.

Internal Checks:

  1. Verify that the coolant level is between the minimum and maximum marks by locating the coolant tank under the bonnet.
  2. Check the oil level using the dipstick. Wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then check the oil level against the markings on the dipstick.
  3. Refill the screen wash bottle to ensure that you have an adequate supply for cleaning the windshield during your journey.

While conducting these checks may seem time-consuming, it’s far preferable to experiencing a breakdown en route to your destination. Taking the time to ensure your vehicle is in good condition will contribute to a safer and more enjoyable travel experience.
