    HAVE A QUESTION?

How Many Driving Lessons Will It Take For Me To Pass My Practical Driving Test?

There are many factors that contribute to how long it will take to pass your driving test, including financial and time constraints. Someone who is able to take a couple of lessons a week (and doesn’t struggle with the practical and theoretical application of learning to drive) will most likely be confident enough to take their driving test at an earlier stage than someone who feels less confident, cannot afford to have as many driving lessons as they’d like and struggles more with the practical and theoretical aspects of learning.

Regular lessons are important, try to keep the gaps as close together as you can between each one! We almost always suggest that you take an introductory lesson which will allow the instructor to see what you can (or more importantly what you can’t) do as it also gives you the chance to meet them and drive the car that you will be using on the driving lessons. You can then make an informed judgement on how many hours you are likely to need to reach the required standard, allowing you to maximise your time and money.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to learn the Highway Code before I can take a practical driving test?
If you want to drive a car you’ll need to pass the driving theory test before booking either the car practical driving test or the motorcycle practical test. You need to have a provisional driving licence to take your driving theory test. There are 2 parts to the theory test, multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test. Both parts of the test are taken on the same day. You must book your driving theory test in advance. The questions in the multiple-choice part and the format of the hazard perception part depend on what kind of vehicle you want to drive. You need to pass both to pass the theory test. You can take the shorter ‘abridged’ car theory test if you’ve got the Safe Road User Award.

Can I use my own car to take a driving test?
You are allowed to use your own car to take a driving test but it does need to meet Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency standards and you will need to ensure the following:

    • The vehicle has been cleansed to a high level
    • An additional interior mirror is available
    • Head restraints are fitted
    • The general condition of the vehicle is of a good standard
    • The vehicle needs to be insured for a driving test

What proof of identity will I need when attending a driving test?
When you meet your DVSA examiner they will ask to see the following documents:

    • Driving Licence (this is a must or you cannot take a test)
    • Theory Certificate
    • Marriage certificate (if you have recently been married and not been able to get your driving licence changed)

Can my driving instructor accompany me on my driving test?
Your driving instructor would usually be allowed to accompany you on your driving test, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the DVSA are not allowing driving instructors to sit in the back of the car. This may change at any time.

What happens if the pupil doesn’t get to test standard before the day of the driving test?
A Pass 4 U always strive to offer the very best service, however, when a pupil does not reach the required standard set out by the DVSA we have a duty of care to the pupil, the examiners and the general public to only allow safe/competent drivers to go for a driving test. The terms and conditions state “The instructor and/or school has the right to withdraw the car from any test if the pupil has not reached the required level to complete a test safely and competently. The instructor will give a full explanation of the reasons for withdrawal. If the pupil decides to stop training at any point, other than an emergency, fees will be forfeited. ”. The instructor will always be given full support as safety is paramount and where possible the driving school and instructor will arrange additional training if the pupil requests this.

If I get nervous during my practical driving test will the examiner penalise me for this?
Absolutely not. In fact, it should be noted that most people taking a driving test will get nervous, it shows that you care about the result. If you do get so nervous you feel yourself not concentrating, then the best thing to do is to tell the examiner that you need to take a moment, pull over and compose yourself. You will not be penalised for doing this as you are showing the driving examiner that you are taking the safest option.

Would a driving examiner fail me for going the wrong way on my driving test?
It is very common for pupils to go the wrong way on a driving test, usually, this is due to nerves or challenges such as dyslexia. If you take a driving test, signal to turn in the correct way and follow that route, even if it’s the wrong one, the examiner will not penalise you. However, if you indicate to turn one way and then turn in the opposite direction, then you have driven wrongly and you will be penalised.

What vehicle safety check questions can I expect to be asked on my driving test?
One question will be asked at the test centre and one other asked on the move. You can find a full list of vehicle safety questions on our blog.

When will I get to find out if I have passed or failed my practical driving test?
The DVSA examiner will give you the result of your test when you arrive back at the test centre as part of a debrief. Regardless of whether you pass or fail the practical driving test, the examiner will explain the results fully including any driving fault marks received. It is important that you allow your driving instructor to listen to the debrief as they will understand the details in more depth and help you to correct them.

Can you drive straight after passing your driving test?
Yes, you can start driving straight after passing your driving test. You do not need to wait for your licence to arrive in the post. However, you should contact the DVLA if your driving licence hasn’t arrived within 3 weeks.
